Despite their obvious usefulness in keeping monsters away, monster hunters are a surprisingly controversial profession, tainted by scammers and criminals. One common scam is to circulate false rumours of a monster in the area, then present an existing monster corpse as proof of their work. Another is to follow village guards or other warriors and claim their kills as their own. Due to this distrust between commoners and monster hunters, official training and vows are required before a hunter can receive a royal certificate of authenticity. These vows differ from those of a soldier, most notably in the promise to spill no human blood within any of the king's lands. To deal with human conflicts, villagers must instead rely on soldiers or hire mercenaries.
